Griha Pravesh Invitation Wording in Hindi and English

Moving into a new home is one of the happiest moments for any Indian family. The griha pravesh puja marks that moment. It is a way of asking for blessings for the house and for everyone who will live there. Most families invite relatives, neighbours and close friends to join the puja and share a meal.

The invitation for a griha pravesh is simpler than a wedding card, but it still needs a little care. Here is wording you can use, along with a few notes on what to include.

What to include

A griha pravesh invitation should tell guests:

  • That it is a griha pravesh or vastu puja, and for which home
  • Who is inviting, usually the head of the family or the couple
  • The date and, importantly, the puja time
  • When the meal or lunch will be served
  • The full address of the new home, with a map if possible

The puja time matters because the griha pravesh is done at a muhurat chosen by the pandit. Guests who want to attend the puja itself need to come on time. Guests who only want to visit and eat can come later.

Formal English wording

With the blessings of the Almighty,
Mr and Mrs Suresh Verma
invite you and your family
to the Griha Pravesh of our new home
on Thursday, 5th February.
Puja at 9.15 am, followed by lunch from 12 noon.
Flat 402, Sunshine Residency, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow

Warm, casual wording

For friends, colleagues and younger relatives, a simpler message works well:

We finally have a home of our own!
Join us for the griha pravesh puja and lunch
on Sunday, 8th February.
Puja at 10 am, lunch from 12.30.
We would love to show you around.

Or a WhatsApp line:

Hi Ankita, we are doing the griha pravesh of our new flat on Sunday the 8th. Puja at 10, lunch after. Do come with Rahul and the kids. Location is in the link.

When it is a joint family

When the house belongs to a joint family, or when parents and children are moving in together, it is nice to include the names of the elders first.

With the blessings of Smt. Kamla Devi,
the Verma family
invites you to the griha pravesh of our new home.

Regional names

The same ceremony goes by different names. In parts of South India it is called gruhapravesam or paalu kaachal, which refers to boiling milk in the new kitchen until it overflows, a sign of abundance. In Bengal you may hear it called griha probesh. Use the term your family and community use. The guests from your community will feel at home with it.

Telling guests what to expect

A few helpful lines you can add to the invitation:

Parking or directions. New housing societies can be confusing. Add the tower number, gate number and a map pin.

Footwear. Guests will remove shoes before entering. Some families mention this to avoid awkwardness.

Gifts. Some families request no gifts. If that is your wish, a short line like "Your blessings are our gift" is polite.

The meal after the puja

Most families serve a simple vegetarian meal after the griha pravesh, often satvik, without onion and garlic, because it follows a puja. Puri, aloo sabzi without onion, kheer, halwa, a dal and rice are common in the North. In the South, a banana leaf meal with payasam is traditional. Mention the lunch time on the invitation so guests know whether to eat before they come. If you are serving a large crowd in a flat, consider staggered timings for different groups so the home does not get too crowded.

When to send

Send the invitation one to two weeks before. The muhurat is often fixed at short notice, so families sometimes send it only a week ahead. That is fine for local guests. For relatives who need to travel, call them as soon as the date is fixed.

Sending it

Most griha pravesh invitations go on WhatsApp now, with a phone call for elders. Our WhatsApp etiquette notes were written for weddings, but the same rules help here: one personal line, a call to the elders, and no big groups.

Planning the day itself

The invitation is the easy part. The puja and the move involve many small things, from the kalash and the coconut to boiling milk in the kitchen. Our griha pravesh checklist covers what to arrange before the day.

The date itself is usually chosen by the pandit. If you want to understand how families pick auspicious dates in general, our note on choosing a muhurat explains the idea, even though it is written for weddings.

How we can help

Our ready-made designs are for weddings, but we make griha pravesh invitations on request. Send us the date, the puja time, the address and the style you like on WhatsApp and we will share a sample and the price. If you like the soft haldi colours of our free Mangal design, or the calm lotus pond of Navkar, mention it and we will keep the same feel.

A new home is a blessing. Invite people warmly, give them the right time and an easy way to find you, and enjoy the day.
